Presbyterian Church (USA)

The Presbyterian Church (USA), often abbreviated PC(USA), is the largest Presbyterian denomination in the United States, with about 1.1 million members. Membership has been gradually declining over the past few decades due to factors such as aging congregations, denominational splits, and broader societal trends away from organized religion. The PC(USA) is considered a mainline Protestant denomination, generally more liberal theologically and socially compared to conservative Presbyterian groups. In the 1980s and 1990s, the denomination experienced splits when more conservative members formed the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA), which now has around 400,000 to 450,000 members.

The PC(USA) emphasizes social justice, inclusivity, and ecumenical partnerships and is known for its relatively progressive stance on social issues. It openly accepts LGBTQ+ individuals, including the ordination of openly gay ministers and the blessing of same-sex marriages, and encourages full participation of women in leadership roles at all levels, from local congregations to the General Assembly. The denomination generally welcomes people from diverse racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds and is active in interfaith dialogue. However, it maintains certain theological boundaries; for example, it generally requires ministers to adhere to a statement of faith rooted in Reformed theology, and those who hold beliefs that fundamentally reject core Reformed doctrines—such as the divinity of Christ or the authority of Scripture—may not be eligible for ordination. Similarly, while the church strives for inclusivity, individual congregations can vary in how they implement policies, meaning there may still be local differences in acceptance.

The PC(USA) is governed through a representative system that includes sessions, presbyteries, synods, and the General Assembly, which helps balance local autonomy with broader denominational standards. This structure allows the denomination to navigate its progressive policies while maintaining theological cohesion across its congregations.
