National Baptist Convention
The NBCUSA does not have an official position on many hot-button issues like abortion or same-sex marriage. Congregations are largely autonomous, so views vary. In general, the denomination has leaned socially conservative on sexual ethics but progressive on racial justice and community issues.

Origins (1800s)
Baptists were among the most common denominations for both enslaved and free Black people in the U.S. during the 1700s and 1800s. Many African Americans were drawn to Baptist churches because of their emphasis on local control (congregational independence) and vibrant worship styles.
However, Black Baptists often faced discrimination and exclusion in white-led churches. This led to the rise of independent Black Baptist congregations, especially after the Civil War when formerly enslaved people established their own churches across the South.
Founding of the National Baptist Convention (1895)
By the late 1800s, African American Baptists wanted a national organization to coordinate missions, publishing, and education. In 1895, three large Black Baptist groups merged in Atlanta, Georgia, to form the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc.
It became the largest Black religious organization in the U.S., and quickly one of the most influential, with a strong focus on education, civil rights, and community development.
20th Century Role
The NBCUSA played a major role in civil rights activism:
Many of its pastors and members, including Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., were leaders in the Civil Rights Movement.
The denomination promoted voter registration, desegregation, and social justice through its churches and educational programs.
There were some splits over the years (for example, the Progressive National Baptist Convention broke away in 1961 over disagreements about civil rights engagement and leadership), but the NBCUSA remained the largest body.
Beliefs & Practices
The NBCUSA is theologically conservative on paper (similar to other Baptists: believer’s baptism, local church autonomy, authority of Scripture), but it has historically emphasized practical faith expressed in social action.
Worship Style: Services are known for powerful preaching, gospel music, and active lay participation.
Social Stances: The NBCUSA does not have an official position on many hot-button issues like abortion or same-sex marriage. Congregations are largely autonomous, so views vary. In general, the denomination has leaned socially conservative on sexual ethics but progressive on racial justice and community issues.
Women in Ministry: Many churches ordain women, but this varies widely.
Today
The NBCUSA has about 5 million members and over 30,000 churches, making it the largest historically Black denomination in the U.S. It remains a central force in African American religious life and community development, with strong ties to education, health initiatives, and social justice advocacy.
Key Takeaway
The National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. was born in 1895 as a unifying body for Black Baptists who had long been excluded from white churches. With 5 million members today, it combines traditional Baptist theology with a strong legacy of civil rights leadership and community empowerment, making it one of the most influential Black institutions in American history.
